The water-filled square reflects the lights of the city

Nathan Scwartz, Grade 12

I love the scent of wet concrete
It’s earthy, it’s musty, it smells like stone
Smells like the wet bricks that make up my home

It takes a specific type of rain to make this smell
It must be a warm rain, and more than a drizzle
Then the sun must come out, but only a little

Whenever it rains is a chance to have fun
Most kids stayed inside on a rainy day
I liked to ask “Mom, can I go out and play?”

Sometimes the rain is scary
I don’t like lightning, baying like hounds
The blinding white flashes, dulled by the clouds

But after it’s over

The sun comes out, I hope for a rainbow
That beautiful multicolored God given light show

But the smell
The scent of wet concrete

No smell is as complex, nostalgic and sweet
