An Interview With Peter Pan

Shawn Hershey

The HHS musical is over, and it was certainly a great success. In the Spring 2023 musical, Peter Pan, students and adults of all ages have been working behind the scenes for months to create the magic that you see on stage. There is a pretty good chance that you know someone who was involved in the musical, whether they were part of the ensemble, stage crew, or pit orchestra. Every HHS musical is only made possible by working together as a school, and the effort always shows.

Peter Pan is a classic story, but it takes a lot of work to make it come to life. As the lead role of Peter Pan, Lucy Bishop has a lot of responsibility and pressure, but that doesn’t stop her from having fun on the stage. Here is a quick peek into the mind of the one and only Peter Pan.

Q: How does it feel to have the lead role?

A: “Honestly, not much different than being in the normal ensemble! I still love being with all the cast while we do what we love.”

Q: What is your favorite part of performing on stage?

A: “Just the whole vibe of the function. There’s a certain air when performing on stage (not sure if it’s figurative or just the fog machine!) with people I love that just boosts my spirits! You can disappear into a new world with a unique story and just have a blast!”

Q: Do you plan on auditioning for a lead role next year?

A: “I might! I also swim on the high school swim team and so balancing musical and swim can sometimes be difficult. However, I had a blast this year being a part of a remarkable cast and would love to be a part of the show again in the future.”

Q: What do you think next year’s musical will be?

A: “Honestly, I couldn’t tell you if I tried! I have a strong feeling we’re going to continue down the route of bringing classic musicals back (which I’m really happy about!), but when it comes to picking productions at Hempfield, you just never know!”

Q: Do you have any advice for people who want to perform in future musicals?

A: “If you love it, go for it! High school musicals only last so long. Be involved! Join crew! Join the pit! If you don’t get a certain role in the show, it’s not the end of the world! You’re going to be a part of something so big and wonderful! Hold onto good friendships and just enjoy the ride!”

This isn’t the first time Lucy Bishop has been on a Hempfield stage. She also performed in last year’s musical, The Wizard of Oz, where she played the role of the barrister in Munchkin Land. In 2021, she helped write the Middle School musical, Through the Years… a Musical Revue. Lucy has followed her passion for many years, and now she gets to be the star of the show.

Hempfield is very proud of everyone who helped in this year’s musical, as well as all of the musicals in the past, and hopes that the tradition can live on as long as possible. Just a little fairy dust and some happy thoughts, and you can make your dreams come true!
