Hempfield High School is performing the iconic musical Fiddler on the Roof, a story about a poor milkman, Tevye, as he struggles when his five daughters reach marrying age, as they push against traditional matchmaking by falling in love with men of their own choosing. Fiddler combines broadway techniques and traditional Jewish music creating an iconic soundtrack. Fiddler has themes of the ability of a family to withstand change and the human experience of relocation and adjustment. Even though this musical takes places in the early 1900’s there are overarching themes that can be relatable in a modern-day world.
Mr. Ramos, the musical director, is excited to present this culturally rich and heartfelt musical. Mr. Ramos has presented 5 musicals at HHS however he says that presenting Fiddler can be difficult because of “The cultural nuances of the setting, balancing the humor with the poignant moments, and ensuring that the themes resonate with modern audiences while staying true to the historical context.” The music plays a large role in the storytelling, Mr. Ramos commented on how the singing “Enhances character development and emotional resonance. The pit orchestra helps present the tone, evoke the setting, and convey the characters emotions.”
The cast of Fiddler is passionate and eager about their upcoming performances. Wilder Long, who plays Tevye, is thrilled by the audience’s reaction to the end of the show. Long remarked that Fiddler is much less abstract than other musicals he has done and the audience can relate to Fiddler on a deeper level. Addie Aument, who plays Hodel also spoke about the realism of the show, describing how the characters show “Raw, somber emotion.” Despite the sadness in this musical, there is some comedy, Long described Fiddler as a “Really funny show. There is an important message in this musical, and that is something that everybody can share”
Fiddler on the Roof is a cherished classic with a remarkable soundtrack. Come see Hempfield High School’s production on March 1st-3rd.
