For years, Hempfield High School has hosted the PIAA Special Olympics Unified Track and Field program to provide competitive opportunities for students with physical and learning disabilities and those without disabilities. Students had the chance to participate in multiple Track and Field events, such as the 100m, 400m, and 800m races, as well as the shotput and mini-javelin throws. The students involved competed in three Track meets. The first was at Conestoga Valley, where they went up against Conestoga Valley and JP McCaskey. The second one was at home, competing against Manheim Central and Conestoga Valley. This meet was met with widespread excitement, and many spectators showed up and showed their support, such as the Hempfield Boys Lacrosse team, as well as the JV Track and Field team, and finally, many family members and friends. The third and final Track meet was held at JP McCaskey’s High School track. Athletes from Hempfield, McCaskey, and Ephrata participated in this competition.
When asked why they had joined the Unified Track Team, many members stated, “It’s such a great program to be part of, and everyone contributes to creating a positive atmosphere”. The positivity of the athletes and the passion shown by them, as well as the support shown by the Hempfield community, is what makes Unified Track and Field truly a heartwarming experience, and a wonderful program to be part of.
