Presidential Election Day passed by, and although most of Hempfield’s students were ineligible to vote, a special occasion last Monday called for their popular selection. Typically, Hempfield High School’s student council will host every class’s representative and officer selection in May of the school year before elected members’ active year. However, a vacancy appeared in the Sophomore class of student council representatives, and a timely exception was made.
Due to schedule conflicts, one of the previously elected Sophomore representatives had to relinquish his position, which left the whole council with just 24 members. Dr. Hough, the council advisor, has shared that the variety and frequency of events hosted by the student council requires a lot of effort. Having at least 25 potentially available helpers is crucial to carrying out fun events for the whole school. Losing one man can result in an increase of pressure on the rest.
Dr. Hough informed the class of 2027 about the opportunity to become a class representative this past week by a series of updates on Schoology. Sophomores who replied to Dr. Hough and showed interest in participating were asked to write a short and simple introduction of themselves for their election debut. Several students reacted and engaged, 8 of whom wrote and sent entries. Those were: Delaney Landis, Lacia Tipping, Rachel Traphagen, Allison Nikolaus, Carter Djaraher, Aapakshya Chhetri, Lainey Groff, Kirryn Quispe-Cochran.
A survey was shared with the class of 2027 to choose the ultimate candidate. The election was held from Monday, October 28 to Wednesday of the same week. Student candidates busied themselves with their own campaigns by spreading word of their participation and gathering sure voters. Many even asked teachers and veterans of the student council for advice. The end result of the election was a close competition: a near tie between Aapakshya Chhetri and Carter Djaraher. In their own words, the council members had never seen such a tight strife, and they decided to welcome both into the club.
