Academic stress isn’t necessarily a bad thing all of the time. It pushes many students to get their work done and achieve excellence, even if it feels very demanding. Unfortunately, much of it becomes rather daunting for some people, and it can discourage them from doing their best.
The main purpose of this article is to spread awareness about academic stress. It’s a pretty tough concept and so many people at Hempfield deal with it. Some may have it worse than others, and that’s okay. I’d just like to let you know that you are most definitely not alone as we are all growing up, and even that is straight-up challenging.
As I stated earlier, stress can be either good or bad. I know that’s a little confusing to figure out at first, so here are a few things that I came up with that can help you determine whether or not your stress will hurt you:
- Is it only one class that you are struggling with? If so, it probably means that you just need to study more for that class. If you feel overwhelmed the entire school day, I suggest that you start trying to change your mindset. Overthinking actually reduces confidence, and a lot of people can relate to that. I’m guilty of it too.
- Is it affecting your overall health? When we’re anxious, we sometimes forget about things such as diet and sleep. It’s important to balance these things out because they make you less stressed. Notice that it’s an ongoing cycle.
- Is it affecting your overall mood? It may sound a little obvious, but extreme stress can also disturb your emotional stability.
As a quick wrap-up, see below an interview that displays the thoughts and opinions of Maddie Salimbeni, a fellow student at Hempfield High School.
How much does stress from school affect your personal life?
“It doesn’t affect me too terribly, however it does affect me to the point where I tend to overthink what I’m doing and try to be perfect.”
What are some ways that you manage stress?
“I manage stress in a few ways. I find that doing cosplay or anything art related helps. Music and watching movies also helps, same with talking to people that I trust.”
What do you think the school can do to help?
“I feel like the school could help by limiting the amount of homework that we get. There are days when I feel like there’s a lot more homework than needed.”
