This year 2024, schools are starting to ban way more on campuses. Since the school year has started, new policies have taken effect across the country. Many support these bans and think that they are what we need in schools, but others are angered and believe things should have stayed the same as before.
Book Bans-
American Library Association shared that some parents believe that they should decide what their kids should be reading from a school library. However they shouldn’t get to dictate what all kids read, and more challenging books should be accessible to students. This has led to a long-lasting debate about whether books should or should not be banned. However, here at Hempfield, we still have many books to choose from.
Phone Bans-
American schools are starting to ban phone usage during all hours of school. In New York and other states across America, these pouches are closed by magnets, and students lock them when they arrive at school and unlock them when they leave. The government has given schools millions of dollars for this project and has had policies passed in these school districts for these pitches and phone bans. Schools say that phones distract from school work and disrupt classes and teachers. Many students are angered at this decision and want this ban lifted. Here at Hempfield, we don’t have this ban or pouches and we still have access to our phones during the school day.
These bans create an interesting environment for schools and people are split down the middle about whether they like these bans or not. Moving forward, in the future, it seems that there will be more bans on phones, books, and possibly even more.
