Volunteering is an excellent way to help show off your skills and show the kind of person you are when applying for a job or for college. While volunteering sounds great in theory, it can be difficult to find opportunities to volunteer and such opportunities that aren’t boring and are actually going to be helpful to you in the future. Below will be many different kinds of volunteering opportunities specifically meant for high school students.
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development: Schreiber is a nonprofit pediatric facility that assists children with developmental services such as therapy and education. Their team of experts, embrace a child’s unique abilities and help them achieve full potential. There are multiple volunteering opportunities, such as Camp Schreiber, the preschool and daycare, the Schreiber Gala, and the Schreiber Duckie Race.
Camp Schreiber
Camp Schreiber is a five week summer camp, with fitness, sports, games, arts and crafts. You must commit to at least two consecutive days.

Schreiber Preschool and Daycare
At the preschool and daycare, you will assist in classroom activities. The classes run on weekdays. By volunteering consistently, you help maintain a stable environment for the children.

Duckie Race
The Schreiber Duckie race takes place every year in September. The race for 2025 has already passed, but in 2026 the race will be September 13th. You can volunteer to help out or run in the race to raise money for the children’s therapy services to receive the care they need. Interested students should sign up with Civic Champs.
St. Anne’s Retirement Community
St. Anne’s retirement community is another volunteering opportunity near Hempfield that students can do for their community– St. Anne’s always needs volunteers. Here you can assist with recreational activities, visit retirees, help in the craft room, and help in the gift or thrift shop. You can apply to be a volunteer by applying online or on paper.

There are many more volunteering opportunities; these are just a few that are easy for Hempfield students to participate in. Volunteering teaches critical life skills that Hempfield students don’t always learn in school. Volunteering is more flexible than working while still allowing time for regular student activities.
